The road descends fairly steeply- dropping from 3400m to about 800m in around 50km. The top was pretty misty – visibility would shift from hundreds of metres to about twenty in a matter of seconds.

The road surface was excellent most of the way- erosion and slippage is clearly a problem, though there are ongoing (and pretty successful) efforts to repair and maintain.

It was really possible to feel the difference the altitude makes- apart from the changing vegetation, there was a distinct moment about (2000m) – dropping out of the clouds, when the air was suddenly very mich warmer.

About 20km from Bucaramanga, there were more serious roadworks- traffic was hald up for half an hour or more. It was while waiting for movement that I ran into Rocio and her father Mario..
